Space Heaters are a Hot Topic This Year After Three Recalls of Malfunctioning Heaters

In December 2010, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. recalled 2.2 million heaters that malfunctioned, resulting in overheating, smoking, burning, melting and fire in 21 different incidents, including 11 reports of property damage and four minor injuries.

The recall, announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, included four brands of 1500 watt heaters.

On February 8, 2011, Lasko Products Inc. recalled 107,500 heaters with a faulty electrical connection in the unit’s base. According to the CPSC, the manufacturer received 36 reports that the defective products melted and exposed the electrical connection, posing a fire hazard to consumers, and in 18 cases, burning floors and carpets.
