Spinal cord injuries are among the most severe consequences of a traumatic injury. Few injuries are as devastating as the loss of movement and quality of life as a spinal injury. Loss of mobility and chronic pain can be expected as well as extensive physical therapy to recover. Full recovery may not be possible. Treatment of a spinal injury can be extremely costly and often results with the victim unable to return to their previous occupation. Spinal cord injuries may also cause paralysis or even death. Even minor injuries can impact daily living by interrupting bowel and bladder function and sensation at all levels.

There are five levels of impairment after suffering a traumatic spinal cord injury according to the American Spinal Injury Association:
A) Complete – No motor or sensory function is preserved in the sacral segments S4-S5.
B) Incomplete – Sensory but not motor function is preserved below the neurological level and includes the sacral segments S4-S5.
C) Incomplete – Motor function is preserved the neurological level, and more than half of key muscles below the neurological level have a muscle grade less than 3.
D) Incomplete – Motor function is preserved below the neurological level, and at least half of key muscles below the neurological level have a muscle grade of 3 or more.
E) Normal – Motor and sensory function are normal.
The location and extent of a spinal cord injury will determine the severity of the symptoms, including pain, numbness, loss of sensation or even paralysis in the affected areas.
